Parents for Truth

With the advent of a statewide policy in NM prohibiting abstinence education in public school grades seven and above and the refusal of federal funding for abstinence education, parents are urged to participate in a new program – Parents for Truth.

Abstinence education empowers teens to avoid risk by making good health decisions, regardless of their sexual history. Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) assumes teens do not have the ability to avoid sexual experimentation [just like animals], so most of their time is spent talking about sex and the use of condoms and other forms of contraception. CSE assumes teens will engage in high risk sexual behavior and are content to merely reduce the risk of that behavior. Organized efforts are underway in every state to replace abstinence education with comprehensive sex education. Parents are being misled by about the true content of comprehensive sex education programs being taught in their children’s classrooms. Expose the truth, your child’s health and future is at stake.

Teach Self Control,
not "Safer Sex"

Responsibility is saving sex for marriage. Responsibility, one of the six pillars of Character Counts is described as “Do what you are supposed to do • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-controlBe self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your choices,” EXCEPT when it comes to sex. Public school sex education promotes irresponsible sexual behavior before marriage because “youth will do it anyway.” Ignoring at least 50% of students who do not have sex, a “Statewide Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program” bill is introduced in some form every legislation and we can expect the same in 2009. It is vital to reduce teen pregnancy in New Mexico, BUT a bill like SB185, which promoted contraceptive/condom education, is not the way to approach this important issue. These are the reasons why:

  • Comprehensive Sex Education (Condoms/Contraception) Will Be the Only Approach
  • Misuse of Funds Shows Health Dept. Irresponsibility
  • DOH Family Planning Programs Have Failed to Reduce Teen Birth or STD Rates
  • DOH Condom/Contraceptive Programs Are Not Cost Effective
  • Some School Districts Will Not Qualify For Funding
  • Abstinence Education Programs Will Be Unable to Access Funds
  • DOH Required Curricula Use Inappropriate Material for NM Students
